This screening plays quiet pure tones at five pitches, one ear at a time. You tell us what you hear. At the end you get a chart of your own results.

Takes about 5 minutes. Nothing is installed and no payment is asked.

This is a screening, not a diagnosis. Home equipment is not calibrated, so these results show the shape of your hearing across pitches, not a clinical measurement. Only an audiologist can diagnose hearing loss.

You will need: headphones or earbuds, and a quiet room. Speakers will not work, because each ear is tested separately.

Let's check your headphones

Press each button. You should hear the tone in that ear only.

If a tone comes out of the wrong side, your headphones are reversed — swap them before continuing.

Set your volume

A steady tone is playing now. Using your device's volume control, turn it down until the tone is soft but still clearly audible.

Do not change the volume again once the test starts. If you do, your results will not be comparable across pitches.

Read this before acting on it. Consumer headphones do not reproduce every pitch at the same loudness, so part of the shape above comes from your equipment. Treat this as a reason to get checked, never as a measurement. If one ear differs sharply from the other, or if you have ringing, pain or sudden change, see a doctor rather than waiting.
